when speaking to god
all you need are seven notes
and…you may even get a reply
I would like to share this heavenly song called Man Kunto Maula. There have been several versions and here is one I recently came across during the celebration of Imam Ali’s birthday. Pooja Gaitonde has taken this song to new heights. It is beautifully composed and sung.
The Prophet Muhammad said:
Man Kunto Maula
Fa haza Ali-un Maula
Whoever I am master to,
Ali is his Master too.
Please do read more about this Qawali and its lyrics here
And now enjoy Pooja’s version of Man Kunto Maula
Sonya – have a listen to the Zila Khan version. She’s got a fabulous voice! It’s on youtube. And then there’s a jugalbandi type from one of the Coke Studio episodes from Pakistan – again, superb!

Lovely haiku. I like to listen to the universe, during quiet times, like in meditation.

Dear Sonya,
Thank you for this wonderful post, and for sharing this lovely rendition of Man Kunto Maula. I’ve heard it said that qawwali speaks to one’s depths like nothing else can speak.
Thank you, as always, for your loving remembrance of Imam Ali.
All good wishes,
robert
