Not Within, Nor Without

Don’t ask me if I love you
Ask if I still love you
Don’t ask if I still love you
Ask if I will ever stop

Don’t ask me when I loved you
Ask me when I didn’t
Don’t ask me when I didn’t love you
Ask me if there will exist such a time

Don’t ask me why I love you
Ask yourself why not
Don’t ask reasons why I should not love you
Ask why a shadow seeks darkness
When only in light it exists
Why the eighth note was never needed
Though music be infinite
Why lines of fate are frivolous
But imagine the palms bare
Ask yourself why the poet cannot live
With words trapped within
Yet cannot live without

  1. Don’t ask me if I love your poetry
Ask yourself why after a few hours of the absence of your words, I feel the need to visit the archives…
When I questioned the purity of love, if only my folly had been clearly visible to me…

But, could you please explain the title of the poem?

    1. Thank you for your wonderful input as always.

This poem was a challenge – How to tell someone you love them without directly saying those words. I was trying to say that the subject cannot live with love within her (overwhelmed) nor can she live without his love – just like
      the poet cannot live
      With words trapped within
      Yet cannot live without

    2. I just realised that I was actually thinking about this poem a few days ago, these lines in particular
“Why the eight note was never needed
      Though music be infinite”
when I was fascinated by my daughter’s harmonium lessons
Interesting co-incidence that you read the very same poem that was buzzing in my mind!

  2. Greetings,

What a lovely poem about the ever-present, potent, innate love which must love!

    Thank you for this.

    All good wishes,
